MORENA Appoints 'Coordinators' Instead of Candidates for 2027 Elections

The National Council of the MORENA party set June 22 as the date to appoint 'state coordinators' in 17 regions where gubernatorial elections will be held. These coordinators will be the main candidates for the 2027 elections. Strict rules were also introduced within the party to prevent premature campaigning and conflicts between candidates.

The National Council of the MORENA party acted as an impartial referee in the current situation. The coordinator of presidential advisors, Jesús Ramírez Cuevas, ruled out the possibility of nominating candidates on June 22, outside the framework of electoral law, stating that only 'coordinators' would be appointed to strengthen the party's state structures. 'There will be no candidate on June 22, only state coordinators to reinforce the structure and supervise that all organizational work in the territories is carried out properly,' he emphasized. Within MORENA, they also dismissed any agreements on gender quotas or regarding youth, which will be established once the electoral framework is defined in early June. At the VII Ordinary Session of the National Council of MORENA, June 22 was set as the deadline to appoint 'state coordinators' in the 17 entities where gubernatorial elections will be held. These coordinators will be the candidates for the 2027 elections. It was decided to conduct polls in May to choose state coordinators on June 22; coordinators for federal districts will be elected on August 3; mayoralties will be defined on September 21, and then on November 8, the 'coordinations' for the local Congress will be prepared. Considering that MORENA's internal process interferes with official electoral timelines, prohibitions were established, including: 'People may not promote their image through billboard advertising under any modality; engage in early campaign acts or violate electoral laws; use public resources of any kind; give out food packages, household appliances, or any other gifts; hold lavish events or deploy ostentatious communication campaigns.' Furthermore, following the precedent of the dispute between then-presidential candidates Marcelo Ebrard and Claudia Sheinbaum, internal sanction norms were also established for discrediting other competitors or the movement's process. 'Making discrediting, demeaning, or aggressive expressions against other participants, or encouraging among their supporters attacks, slander, confrontation, or violence; spreading false, manipulated, or malicious information about other participants... or discrediting the internal process; organizing or promoting campaigns of harassment, discrediting, or digital lynching on social networks and simulating belonging to a vulnerable group to obtain competitive advantages,' was added to the approved document. Regarding the process itself, the president of the National Council of MORENA, Alfonso Durazo, stated: 'What we propose today seeks to regulate and give a stable course to this process so that it results in unmanageable disputes.'
