Sheinbaum on Electoral Reform Failure and 'Plan B'

Mexico City's President Claudia Sheinbaum commented on the reform's failure in parliament, stating it's not a defeat and announced 'Plan B' to cut political privileges. She also called for electoral issues to be put to public consultation.

Sheinbaum on Electoral Reform Failure and 'Plan B'

President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the word 'punishment' is an exaggeration. 'We are not in those political parties where there were purges for not agreeing, but 99% of Morena voted in favor... everyone knew it was not going to be approved... people see who actually votes... there are those who do not want to reduce those privileges,' she said. The only ones who voted yesterday for the proposal to reduce INE and party funds were the Morena deputies, 12 deputies from the Green Party and 1 from the PT, the rest did not, starting with the PRI, PAN and MC, and some from the Green Party and the PT,' affirmed the president. 'We don't lie, we don't steal, and we don't betray,' said the head of state. Regarding Plan B, she announced that it will be presented next March 16 and aims to reduce resources to the Senate, as well as to local congresses and municipalities. 'Plan B consists of that, we will present it on Monday... essentially, to reduce privileges and increase people's participation... we will see to which chamber we send it, if it doesn't pass, it doesn't pass.' 'I cannot betray the origin of the movement I represent, the Morena deputies who did not vote do not have those convictions, they have others. We have a mandate, a conviction, a principle, we don't forget where we come from.' 'For example, if Monterrey had 10 councilors, where would that resource go? To the municipality for public works... municipalities and states are autonomous, but there should be no excesses,' she declared. 'The fact that it was not approved is not a defeat, I am very satisfied, the people know that one is not willing to negotiate everything.' 'We seek for there to be issues that go to public consultation, such as party funding. Or let themselves be carried away by what comes out in Reforma, Latinus or I don't know... Morena in its great majority voted in favor, not because the president threatened them, but out of conviction, that is better than blurring yourself... President López Obrador called them 'good progressives', I tell them 'washa washa', neither here nor there, why do they wear themselves out... but enough, let the people decide,' she added. She pointed out that the vote revealed some political actors. 'Stay in the municipalities, stay with the people. I propose, why don't we ask the people, to allow some electoral issues in the popular consultation, for the people to decide, that is democracy,' she added. When questioned about whether there will be political repercussions, she ruled out any 'punishment' for those who were not in favor and reiterated that the only consequences will be at the polls. However, she did point to the members of Morena who did not support the initiative. After the rejection of the electoral reform in the Chamber of Deputies, President Claudia Sheinbaum assured that it is not a defeat in her six-year term and is already rushing Plan B for next week. In addition, she seeks for electoral issues to become public consultation in electoral processes, such as party financing and the composition of plurinominals. 'The councilorships at one point were quotas, the truth is the country does not need it. Honesty, republican austerity gives results... we are going to move forward,' commented Sheinbaum Pardo. 'That is why we have the popular support that we have, if we negotiated our sovereignty we would not have it, if we were flaunting privileges we would not have it it either.' 'A maximum limit must be placed on what should be allocated from the budget to the Local Congresses, the Senate of the Republic... which has much more budget per Senator. What would become of this resource?'
