Sheinbaum Defends 'Plan B' for Recall Election in Mexico

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum defended on Wednesday the 'Plan B' project sent to Congress, which would enable the holding of a recall election in 2027, allowing the person subject to the vote to speak about the issue and campaign for it. 'If there is going to be a recall, then let's allow people to speak,' she stated and clarified that the initiative would not allow the incumbent to run an electoral campaign in favor of certain political parties. 'What cannot be canceled is the possibility of speaking about the recall of the person who is subject to it,' she added. Sheinbaum explained that the reform, which Congress will discuss in the coming days, would enable the person undergoing a recall to speak about the topic, but not to campaign in favor of other figures or political parties. 'It's absurd; if there is going to be a recall, then let's allow people to speak.' 'We are changing the constitution so that any president or citizen who wants to request a recall can do so in the middle of the term or a year after,' she elaborated and recalled that in 2022, then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was not permitted by the judiciary to speak on the matter. In this sense, she defended the possibility of holding the recall election next year, or in 2028 at the latest. 'It's not about using television time, but simply being able to speak,' she went on to say and announced that it will be the Legislative Branch that will approve these reforms, already known as 'Plan B,' after the allies of the Green Party and the PT torpedoed Plan A. 'No one is talking about electoral propaganda, but about allowing the incumbent to speak,' she concluded. Inaugurations should also be suspended,' the head of state considered during her daily press conference. 'It's not about using official time slots, but about being able to speak. How can you be subject to a recall and not be allowed to speak?'
