The Mexican Senate has approved a 'Plan B' for presidential recall elections, but without holding it alongside the 2027 midterm elections. During a meeting of the ruling coalition at the Ministry of the Interior on March 15, it was established that the citizen consultation would take place in August of the following year or in 2028. However, the Morena party proposed it for June 2027. The Labor Party (PT) remained firm and rejected the proposal to change the date of the consultation so that it could be held concurrently with the federal elections. As a result, an alternative version of the reform was approved, excluding the recall of the mandate for the upcoming year. This version was seen as a watering down of the original initiative proposed by Sheinbaum.
