Gelman Collection Exhibition Extended in Mexico Until July 2026

Mexico's Secretary of Culture announced the Gelman Collection exhibition will stay at the Museum of Modern Art until July 2026. The collection will go to Spain but return to Mexico in 2028. President Sheinbaum denied rumors of selling the collection abroad and praised the security operation during the Mexico vs. Portugal match.

The Secretary of Culture of Mexico announced that the Gelman Collection exhibition will remain open until July 2026 at the Museum of Modern Art. The head of the agency clarified that the collection will indeed soon leave the country to be exhibited in Spain; however, it will return to Mexico in 2028. The Gelman Collection, which is on display for the first time in 20 years, is part of 35 private collections with works declared artistic monuments. A declaration of an artistic monument is given to protect works considered part of the cultural heritage, regulating their conservation and prohibiting their definitive export, meaning the works can only leave the country temporarily. In accordance with customs law, the exhibition returns to Mexico every two years, so it will be back in 2028. Under this framework, the exhibition has left Mexico at least 30 times, and in all cases, it has returned to undergo a five-year process of supervision and restoration. In this context, President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized those who claimed her government had sold the collection abroad and reiterated that everything is false. "It is absolutely false," she pointed out. Sheinbaum also praised the mobility operation during the Mexico-Portugal match, calling it "a good exercise towards the World Cup." She said people left their cars elsewhere and traveled directly to the venue. The president also lamented the death of a fan who jumped to the first level of the Banorte Stadium. Overall, it was a good exercise for the World Cup inauguration, Sheinbaum highlighted. Meanwhile, the Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office (Profeco) conducted a monitoring of the price per kilogram of tomatoes and reported that the average remains at 41.09 pesos. Many people were spreading rumors that the collection was being sold abroad until what was already mentioned was explained. Sheinbaum also predicted that the World Cup will be successful in all three host countries: Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Regarding Mexico, she added that the security protocol is well-prepared and ruled out any problems. President Sheinbaum is also insisting with gas station owners on setting a 'price cap' for diesel fuel, stating: 'We want an additional reduction.' She acknowledged that the biggest impact of the war in the Middle East is on fuel costs due to the increase in oil prices. At 9:30 AM, Claudia Sheinbaum will have breakfast with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss the results of the Mexico vs. Portugal match and other World Cup topics.
