Sentences Handed Down for Murder of 15-Year-Old Leyla Monserrat in Sonora

The juvenile justice system in the state of Sonora has sentenced the two minors responsible for the murder of 15-year-old Leyla Monserrat. One of the defendants must serve a two-year and ten-month custodial sentence, while the second was sentenced to supervised release and payment of 5,677 pesos in damages. The incidents date back to September 25, 2025, when the victim's disappearance was reported in the El Desierto area. After a week of searching, the Sonora State Attorney General's Office confirmed the discovery of the young woman's body on October 2, buried in the courtyard of a home. According to a bulletin issued by the institution on October 10, 2025, the forensic report determined that the teenager was killed by mechanical asphyxiation. Although the possible participation of an adult identified as Martín 'N', alias El Kalusha, was initially investigated, the progress of the investigation established the direct responsibility of two 13 and 15-year-old teenagers, who were the victim's former friends. A video of the crime allegedly recorded by the girls is circulating on social media. In it, the victim appears to be tied to a chair with her eyes blindfolded, being strangled with a cord. The video was received anonymously by Carmen Angélica Becerra Valencia, Leyla Monserrat's mother, and was presented to a judge in Sonora, according to local media. For this reason, Angélica Becerra requested a review of the sentence against the teenagers who killed her daughter.
