Clash Between Police and Protesters in Mexico

A clash occurred between state police and protesters, comprising transporters and peasants, on the Mexico-Veracruz federal highway in the municipality of Nanacamilpa, Tlaxcala. The conflict took place against the backdrop of a national protest day that has affected various states due to road blockades promoted by the National Transporters Association (ANTAC) and rural producer groups. According to reports and testimonies circulated on social media and local media, clashes between police and protesters led to scenes of violence and the use of tear gas. Videos circulating on digital platforms show officers using physical force and devices to disperse those blocking the road with tractors and agricultural machinery. ANTAC issued a communiqué categorically rejecting what it calls a violent eviction, holding the state government responsible for the police actions. The organization denounced that several of its members may be missing following the events and that some protesters were beaten or attacked with firearms during the operation. Among the demands presented by the association are: the presentation alive of all missing persons, the cessation of repression against transporters and peasants, and a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation that sanctions those responsible. The organization assured that the unity among the mobilized groups remains firm and that these events will not be forgotten, reiterating its rejection of any justification for the force used. The conflict in Tlaxcala occurs within the framework of a national protest day in which transporters and farmers have carried out blockades in at least nine states, including Baja California, Guanajuato, Morelos, Veracruz, and Zacatecas, among others. The protesters' demands include better road safety conditions, a reduction in the price of diesel, and a stop to what they classify as abuses of authority. The blockades have caused significant traffic disruptions, with long lines of vehicles stranded on key circulation routes. To date, the state authorities of Tlaxcala have not issued a comprehensive statement regarding the accusations of disappearances or aggressions during the operation, although various sources indicate that government institutions have shown a willingness to dialogue since the beginning of the demonstrations.
