The Labor Party (PT) announced that it will request a political trial for eight ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), including Minister Norma Piña, whom they accuse of leading a "legal war" against the judicial reform. Deputy Reginaldo Sandoval Flores, coordinator of the PT parliamentary group in the House of Deputies, pointed out that this is a complaint against the ministers who are in "disobedience" and "rebellion," and who have attacked democratic institutions and violated constitutional supremacy.
According to the deputy, the protections presented by some judges and ministers are invalid, as the amendments to the Constitution went through a process that has already concluded. Ricardo Mejía Berdeja, another deputy, presented the list of the eight ministers who are subjects of this political trial request. Among them are Norma Lucía Piña Hernández, president of the Court, Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, Juan Luis González Alcántara Carrancá, Luis María Aguilar Morales, Jorge Mario Pardo Rebolledo, Ana Margarita Ríos Farjat, Javier Laynez Potisek, and Alberto Pérez Dayán.
Mejía Berdeja accused the ministers of violating constitutional supremacy, arguing that the Constitution establishes that there is no law or treaty above it and that changes must be the prerogative of the supreme reforming Power. In addition, he referred to "orchestrated measures" since the approval of the reform to the Judiciary, including suspensions of judges to prevent discussion and even publication in the Official Journal of the Federation.
The evaluation and selection process for candidates for ministers, magistrates, and judges in 2025 includes the installation of evaluation committees by the three powers on October 31. Subsequently, the call for applications will be published on November 4, and from November 5 to 24 will be the deadline for registration for the calls. The committees will verify that the candidates meet the constitutional eligibility requirements on December 14, and the list of persons who have met the requirements will be published on December 15.
Additionally, on January 31, 2025, the suitability of the eligible persons will be evaluated, and on February 4, the best-rated profiles for each position will be selected. Finally, on February 6, adjustments will be made to the number of nominations, while on February 9, the vetted lists will be approved by the Powers of the Union and sent to the Senate of the Republic, and on February 12 to the National Electoral Institute (INE).
