Mario Delgado, current Secretary of Public Education (SEP), shared the goals set by Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo's administration to increase the admission of more than 300,000 students in public higher education institutions. The main purpose of this program is to provide study opportunities to a greater number of young people in educational centers where education is free and accessible to all. These statements were made during the morning conference on Wednesday, October 23, known as La Mañanera, at the National Palace.
Among the planned strategies is the creation of at least 90 new universities, distributed across 30 campuses of the Universidad Rosario Castellanos, 10 campuses of the Universidad de la Salud, and 50 campuses of the Sistema de Universidades del Bienestar. Additionally, the National Technological Institute of Mexico is expected to expand its educational offer for an additional 85,000 students, as well as the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) with at least 30,000 new places, without the need to build new facilities for these institutions.
In the presentation of the details of each institution, Raquel Sosa Elízaga, General Director of the Universities for the Wellbeing 'Benito Juárez'; Ramón Jiménez López, General Director of the National Technological Institute of Mexico (TecNM); and Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, Secretary of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation participated. Each of them detailed the specific plans and projects for achieving the educational goals set.
The projected distribution of slots in the announced public universities is as follows: 30 new campuses of the Universidad Rosario Castellanos will contribute a total of 150,000 to 206,000 spaces, 10 new campuses of the Universidad de la Salud will add between 25,000 and 29,000 places, and 50 new campuses of the Sistema de Universidades del Bienestar will offer between 40,000 and 110,000 places. Likewise, it is expected that the National Technological Institute of Mexico will reach a total of 660,000 students, with 85,000 new entrants, while the IPN plans to reach 246,000 places, increasing the current number by 30,000. Together, the creation of a total of 330,000 new educational spaces in the public university sector is expected.
