Legal Tensions in the Mexican Senate

The opposition criticizes Morena for its refusal to comply with a judicial mandate regarding judicial reform. Senators defend the decision amid growing controversy over the authority of the presidency.

Legal Tensions in the Mexican Senate

The coordinator of Movimiento Ciudadano, Clemente Castañeda, described the current situation as absurd and a legal blunder, stating that Morena and the government are trying to hold the public powers accountable for a possible defiance by the Presidency of the Republic. Castañeda urged that, in case of disagreement with a ruling, the appropriate legal channels should be pursued.

On her part, the PRI member Carolina Viggiano asserted that the Legal Counsel of the Presidency is not authorized to request an agreement from the Senate, while PAN member Marko Cortés expressed that the consultation conducted by the Presidency seeks to evade responsibilities and shift them to Congress.

The Senate, with 81 votes in favor and 36 against, supported the Executive Power's decision not to comply with a Veracruz judge's order to remove the publication of a reform in the Official Journal of the Federation. The Legal Counsel of the Presidency consulted the Senate about the possibility of eliminating said publication, which was rejected by the Board of Directors of the upper chamber.

The president of the Board of Directors, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, stated that the Presidency lacks the authority to modify the Official Journal of the Federation by removing the judicial reform, declaring that "this sovereignty considers that the Presidency of the Republic lacks powers." In this regard, Senator Félix Salgado Macedonio pointed out that the Veracruz judge does not have the necessary powers to order President Sheinbaum. Salgado Macedonio also mentioned that there is an influence of right-wing interests in this situation.
