US Supports Ambassador Amid Security Tensions

The Government of the United States has expressed its support for the ambassador in Mexico, Ken Salazar, following his statements about the security policy in the country, emphasizing that there is still important work to be done, after receiving a note of protest from Mexico.

Vedant Patel, deputy spokesperson for the State Department, has assured that cooperation in security with Mexico is a national priority. He highlighted the interest in strengthening cooperation with the administration of Claudia Sheinbaum to protect communities on both sides of the border.

For her part, Sheinbaum has emphasized the importance of coordination in the relationship with the United States and reiterated that this must be about subordination, following Salazar's criticisms of the Mexican security strategy, including the use of the doctrine of "hugs instead of bullets" by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Salazar, appointed by Joe Biden and whose continued position is in the hands of incoming President Donald Trump, has expressed his concern about the results of current security policies in Mexico, which generated a formal response from Mexico through Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente. The latter will be responsible for interactions with the ambassador, making it clear that Sheinbaum will not hold a meeting with him.

The situation highlights the complexity of the cooperation and dialogue dynamic between Mexico and the United States on security issues, in a context where both nations seek to find effective ways to combat violence and transnational crime.
