Canelo Álvarez to Return to the Ring in September

Mexican boxer Saúl 'Canelo' Álvarez, one of the most renowned fighters of the 21st century, will return to the ring on September 12 in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, against an undetermined opponent. Turki Alalshikh, owner of The Ring Magazine, announced on social media on Thursday the boxer's return for an event titled 'Mexico vs. the World,' to be held hours before Mexico's Independence Day anniversary. Álvarez lost his super middleweight titles last September 25 after being defeated by American Terrence Crawford, following which the fighter underwent elbow surgery. Against Crawford, the Mexican showed little speed and was outclassed, which not only cost him the world titles but also raised questions about how much time he has left in boxing. With 63 victories, 39 by knockout; 3 draws and 2 defeats, Álvarez is the best Mexican boxer in the last 25 years. However, he has been criticized for avoiding rivals, such as American David Benavidez, who has repeatedly challenged the tapatío. Benavidez holds the WBC light heavyweight title and does not seem likely to be 'Canelo's' opponent, who will attempt to reclaim the lost belts from Crawford, who retired after defeating the Mexican. After losing on May 7, 2022, to Russian Dmitry Bivol, the Mexican won six consecutive fights, but in none of them was he able to win before the limit, which he last did in 2021 against American Caleb Plant.
