Distinguished Career of Mexican Athlete Andrés Aquino

Andrés Enrique Aquino Busquets is a Mexican athlete whose career in middle and long-distance running spans over a decade. He is a medalist in the Olympic Games, Pan American Games, and numerous other international tournaments. After retiring as an athlete, he has successfully worked as a coach, sports commentator, and event organizer, making a significant contribution to Mexican sports.


Andrés Enrique Aquino Busquets had a distinguished career in athletics, specializing in 5,000 and 10,000-meter races, with a competitive career spanning from 1968 to 1982. At the Central American and Caribbean University Championships held in Santo Domingo in 1977, he won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters and the silver in the 5,000 meters. In national competitions, he stood out at the 1976 Mexican National Athletics Championships, winning gold in the 10,000 meters and setting a national record. Domestically, he competed in over 700 national races across the Mexican Republic, from 800 meters to the marathon. He was part of the representative athletics team of ITESM Monterrey from 1969 to 1971, and later of the UNAM representative team from 1972 to 1979.

In sports-related activities, he was a member of the board of the Mexican Olympians Association and an Olympic torchbearer during the opening ceremony of the 1979 World University Games in Mexico City. Subsequently, at the 1982 Central American and Caribbean Games in Havana, he won a silver medal in the 10,000 meters. At the international university level, he participated in the 1979 World University Games in Mexico City, where he secured silver in the 10,000 meters and bronze in the 5,000 meters. On the continental stage, he attended the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan, winning a silver medal in the 10,000 meters and fourth place in the 5,000 meters. Throughout his career, he accumulated participation in over 100 international competitions, representing Mexico in the United States, Canada, Central America and the Caribbean, South America, and Europe, in events ranging from 1,500 to 10,000 meters, as well as the marathon.

His participation in the Olympic Games took place in Moscow 1980, where he competed in the 5,000 meters, finishing 8th in the semifinals, and in the 10,000 meters, reaching 6th place in the heats. He has been a contributor to the magazine 'Corredores y Club de Corredores,' with articles on long-distance running and the marathon, from 1983 to the present. As a speaker, he has addressed topics related to running at events such as the Mexico City Marathon, the 'Marathon of the Workers' in Mexico City, the Lala Marathon in Torreón, Coahuila, and the Culiacán Marathon in Sinaloa. In recognition of his career, the 'Enrique Aquino' Olympic Court was named at CONALEP Ciudad Azteca. He covered the Pan American qualifier for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, as well as the Central American and Caribbean Athletics Championships in Guatemala. Currently, he continues as an active athlete in the master and veteran categories to this day.

He served as a coach for long-distance and marathon runners, and was also the founder and director of META Sports Marketing S.A. de C.V. and META Promociones Deportivas S.C., a position he has held since 1982. In the field of communication, he was a announcer and sports commentator for TV Azteca during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, host of the program 'Corredores,' and a sports commentator on MVS-Multivisión from 1992 to 1996.
