In the National Palace, they know the project will require political support and backing, which is why the mayor's office of Acapulco is poised to be one of the most important and contested positions in Guerrero for the 2027 elections. For this reason, despite nearly two years remaining, the 2027 elections are already being analyzed at the federal level. The city of Acapulco and the state of Guerrero are suffering from a security crisis that the government is seeking to reverse. The mayor, Abelina López Rodríguez, will not be able to run for re-election because she took office in 2021 and her term is ending, so the race is already open. This is compounded by both local and state government dynamics. Nevertheless, in the ruling party, they recognize two problems that also need to be resolved to achieve their goal: the years-long security crisis in Guerrero and the local government of the MORENA mayor, Abelina López Rodríguez, who has been involved in recent scandals over the use of luxury jewelry and clothing. Since the beginning of her term, President Claudia Sheinbaum has had a particular goal for Guerrero: the reconstruction and resurgence of Acapulco as a leading city for tourism and for the state. One such figure is federal deputy Javier Taja, brother of Ricardo Taja, a former mayoral and local legislative candidate who was shot and killed in Acapulco in 2023 while preparing to run for a seat in San Lázaro for MORENA. Given this precedent, some factions in the Fourth Transformation believe Javier Taja might withdraw his candidacy. Another figure is his party colleague and former local deputy in Guerrero, Yoloczin Domínguez, who previously sought the mayor's office in the last elections—unsuccessfully. However, this is not the only federal connection involved, as there is also work being done by the Navy (which recently launched the Marina Bus to improve internal transportation), the Secretariat of Security headed by Omar García Harfuch, and the Public Works office led by Jesús Esteva Medina. Another name on the list is the national party's secretary of Science, Art, and Culture, Arturo Martínez Núñez. With almost two years until the elections and amidst a multi-million dollar reconstruction plan involving funds from various federal and local agencies, MORENA is already thinking about the future of one of the country's flagship coastal cities. Another figure in the 'third wave' is federal deputy Irugami Perea, who is very close to the current head of Birmex, Carlos Ulloa, maintaining a close work and personal relationship with President Claudia Sheinbaum, with whom he also worked in the capital. The federal government is already indicating that supporting the municipality and addressing the historical security crisis affecting the state will be two fundamental points to make Acapulco the beach it once was. One of the people in charge of this task is the director of Fonatur, Sebastián Ramírez, a man very close to the head of state, with whom he worked when she was Head of Government in CDMX. In San Lázaro, these two are not the only ones aspiring to govern the municipality. In light of this, sources from the 'third wave' say she would try to achieve her goal after securing a candidacy for federal deputy. Thus, according to LPO, there are already some figures raising their hands to compete. Following the hurricanes Otis and John, her administration launched a series of programs aimed at relaunching the historic coastal city through various projects that have accelerated in recent months. This plan includes works on water and drainage, reconstruction of roads and neighborhoods, the restoration of its historic bays, and the delivery of social programs. Even Sheinbaum stated, during one of her morning press conferences, that this issue 'must be resolved by MORENA'.
