Power Struggle Intensifies in Acapulco, Mexico

As Mexico's 2027 elections approach, the struggle for influence in key cities like Acapulco intensifies. President Claudia Sheinbaum denies having favorites among candidates, stating that the Morena party will use surveys to determine the ballot. This creates tension among various political figures vying for key posts.

Power Struggle Intensifies in Acapulco, Mexico

Previously, with PRIAN governments, candidates were handpicked, but in Morena we use surveys, remarked one official. Electoral Reform: The Green Party and the Labor Party believe an agreement will be reached with Claudia but do not rule out an alliance with Dante. In this way, the head of state dealt a blow to the political and electoral ambitions of Ricardo Salinas Méndez, who seeks to compete for the famous Pacific port. In this scenario, they are pushing their candidacy to secure structure and influence, but the head of state did not bring good news on Wednesday. If the head of state's words were not the best for Ricardo Salinas Méndez, they were good news for other figures who have already thrown their hats into the ring. Among them, as detailed by LPO, is federal deputy Javier Taja, who is still analyzing whether to run or continue his work in CDMX, considering that his brother, Ricardo Taja, was shot dead in Acapulco in 2023. In response, his party colleague Yoloczin Domínguez is also throwing her hat in the ring to achieve an objective she has already tried unsuccessfully in the past. Félix Salgado seeks to land in Acapulco to maintain power quotas, causing discontent in the 4T. Another figure appearing with intentions to compete for the port is also federal deputy Irugami Perea, who has greater harmony with the National Palace due to his fluid relationship with the new head of Birmex, Carlos Ulloa, one of President Claudia Sheinbaum's most trusted men. Furthermore, the federal deputy is close to the director of Fonatur, Sebastián Domínguez, who is in charge of rebuilding Acapulco under the direct order of Claudia Sheinbaum and who was also appointed as the president's delegate in Guerrero for the 2027 elections. With this scenario, the electoral dispute for the 2027 elections intensifies, especially for the future of Acapulco, the most important city in Guerrero, for which various figures from the 4T have already thrown their hats in the ring. In this context, some figures aspiring to public offices claim to have the approval and support of President Claudia Sheinbaum. For now, although some candidacies announce support or special endorsements for their electoral campaigns, nothing is defined, and the survey will be the method that will define the ballot; which is currently uncertain. However, on Wednesday, the head of state denied this and rejected having a favorite for the mayorship of Acapulco in the state Secretary of Finance and Administration's chief of staff, Ricardo Salinas Méndez. 'In Morena, the survey is what defines,' he remarked. During the morning briefing he led on Wednesday, the head of state denied 'having favorites for governors, mayors, deputies, or senators,' as some figures who have already thrown their hats in the ring for next year's elections claim. Likewise, Sheinbaum defended the survey method that the guinda party will apply to define the ballots it will present in next year's elections. As detailed by LPO, the official from the governor's office, Evelyn Salgado, is the bet of the Salgado family—and especially of Senator Félix Salgado—to maintain power quotas in the federal entity if that political group fails to secure the governorship candidacy. Next year's elections become increasingly important for the 4T every day.
