Controversy Over Narcocorridos Escalates in Mexico

In the midst of the scandal over the cancellation of narcocorridos and the interpreters of the Mexican regional genre who have shown their discontent, a well-known host from TV Azteca recalled the occasion when a singer threatened her after asking an uncomfortable question.

Various artists from the Mexican regional genre have been sanctioned in recent days for performing songs dedicated to figures of organized crime. While this is happening, Mónica Garza bravely spoke about the time when the vocalist of Los Tucanes de Tijuana issued a strong warning after she asked him a question that he did not like.

The revelation occurred during a conversation with Alejandro Zúñiga during the most recent transmission of the podcast 'Perversiones de un café.'

The TV Azteca host revealed one of the strongest threats she has faced in her career. Mónica Garza confessed: 'A few years ago, during the recording of an episode of 'Historias Engarzadas' with a band dedicated to the grupero genre, I brought up an investigation that the DEA had opened against them since they sang corridos dedicated to a certain figure of organized crime.'

'At the end of the recording, this person, when we took the photo, secretly told me: 'Hey, let's see if I don't get taken off singing because of your questions, because if I am taken off from singing, you will be taken off from questioning',' she recalled the singer's words.

However, that did not stop Garza in her journalistic career: 'That was one of the first threats I received for doing my job and for questioning stories that were the truth. It is the real battle in favor of freedom of expression.' The most important decision one must make is not to self-censor, not to be afraid to ask, to expose, to question.
