In the municipality of Atlixco, in the state of Puebla, Mexico, a peculiar tradition is celebrated on Good Friday: the Mexican 'engrillados' commemorate the Passion of Christ by carrying up to 80 kilos of chains and wearing thorns on their bodies. This year marks 40 years since this tradition began in the locality.
Twenty men and eight women participate in this ceremony, which has become an emblematic moment within the Holy Week celebrations in the region. The participants walk through the streets of the municipality, carrying the heavy chains as a sign of sacrifice and penance during Good Friday.
One of the most striking aspects of this celebration is the fervor and devotion with which the 'engrillados' carry out this practice.
