President Claudia Sheinbaum has requested congressional approval for U.S. Army personnel to enter Mexico for training sessions with Mexican marines. Request for U.S. Army Training in Mexico

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, sent an official letter to the Congress of the Union requesting authorization for the United States Army to enter the country and provide training to Mexican marines. The request seeks the participation of U.S. military in the training activity called "Strengthening the Capability of the Special Operations Forces of the Secretariat of the Navy."

According to the document presented to the Permanent Commission of the Congress of the Union, the proposed training would take place at the Specialized Infantry Training and Training Center of the Navy in San Luis Carpizo, Campeche, from February 17 to March 28, 2025. The president argues that it is the exclusive authority of the Senate of the Republic to authorize the passage of foreign troops through national territory and mentions that the Secretariat of the Navy received an invitation to carry out the training from the U.S. Embassy.

The objective of the training event would be for the elements of the Special Forces of the United States Army's Special Operations Command and the personnel from the Special Operations Unit of the Secretariat of the Navy to engage in training activities in conventional and unconventional combat tactics in maritime, terrestrial, and aerial environments.

In the event of receiving the corresponding legislative authorization, a delegation of 10 elements from the United States' Seventh Special Forces Group would enter Mexican territory with the necessary equipment to conduct the training. The U.S. military personnel would arrive at Campeche International Airport on February 15, 2025, and depart from the country on March 30, 2025. The request has been sent to commissions for analysis and approval.
