Detained American Man in Chihuahua for Arms Trafficking

An American man was arrested in the state of Chihuahua, accused by his country of trafficking and smuggling weapons. The detainee, identified as Román Alberto Muñoz Reza, is linked to the attack against the current head of the Citizen Security Secretariat, Omar García Harfuch, which occurred in 2020. The capture was made possible thanks to the collaboration of police elements from the Strategic Operations Prosecutor's Office, National Guard, and the SEDENA.

In June 2020, Omar García Harfuch, who was then the Secretary of Security for Mexico City, survived an attack while heading to a work meeting. During the attack in the exclusive area of Lomas de Chapultepec, two of his bodyguards and a woman passing by lost their lives in a shooting that lasted just over four minutes.

The detainee, Román Alberto Muñoz, has been primarily operating in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, although he has also extended his activities to other states. It is believed that the attack against García Harfuch was a retaliation by the CJNG for the arrests of its leaders. In 2020, the cartel also murdered the governor of Jalisco, Aristóteles Sandoval, in Puerto Vallarta.

Román Alberto Muñoz was deported to the United States on March 4, while Omar García Harfuch emerged unharmed from the attack carried out by members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Investigations by the Mexico City Attorney General's Office point to LaFirma, led by Carlos Andrés Rivera Varela, as the mastermind behind the attack. LaFirma, of Colombian origin, is one of the close collaborators of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, who is the founder of the CJNG.
