Cuauhtémoc Mayor Announces Arrest of Parking Attendants

The mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, reported the detention of 166 parking attendants during the period from January 1 to 24 as part of a report on her first 100 days in office and her measures aimed at improving safety and reclaiming public space in the borough.

Rojo de la Vega explained that the detentions were made due to abuses committed by some parking attendants, who aggressively charged for allowing vehicles to park on the main streets of Mexico City. According to the mayor, the actions carried out are within the legal framework and in response to citizen complaints.

In response to criticisms that she would be criminalizing parking attendants, Rojo de la Vega emphasized the need to regularize the situation, seeking short, medium, and long-term solutions. She pointed out that it is illegal for them to charge for the use of public space during times when nobody should have to pay to transit through the city, as they are neither registered nor regulated, which leaves citizens in a vulnerable position.

Regarding why the same law is not applied to restaurant terraces that occupy part of the roadway, the mayor explained that these establishments are protected by the Open-Air City program, which allows them to pay for the right to use the space. Rojo de la Vega assured that the corresponding payments are being reviewed.

In addition to the detentions of parking attendants, the mayor reported that she received death threats on Sunday, January 26, through audio files mentioning that they had her located and would kill her if she continued to intervene in Tepito. In light of these threats, Rojo de la Vega filed a complaint, and the Citizen Security Secretariat is conducting the relevant investigations to identify those responsible. In this regard, the mayor stressed her commitment not to allow intimidation to divert her work in favor of safety and thanked citizens for their support in the fight against insecurity.
