Detention of SCJN official for sexual abuse

Ricardo Márquez Blas, who works at the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), was arrested by elements of the Investigation Police (PDI) on Tuesday, October 22, after being accused of sexual abuse. Márquez is currently the coordinator of Strengthening at the Court and was apprehended as he was leaving his offices located in the Cuauhtémoc municipality.

Before his arrest, Márquez had worked for Genaro García Luna, a former secretary recently sentenced to 38 years in prison in the United States. He is currently recognized as a close official to the president minister of the SCJN, Norma Piña. The events date back to August when a Court employee reported Márquez for rape within the jurisdictional body's facilities. The woman presented evidence, including WhatsApp messages in which Márquez mentioned contacts in the Court, leading to his transfer to the Eastern Preventive Men's Prison.

The Court indicated that Márquez is being investigated by the General Unit of Investigation of Administrative Responsibilities (UGIRA) following an internal complaint against him. Former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had previously pointed out Minister Norma Piña for employing a former collaborator of Genaro García Luna.

Ricardo Márquez Blas held the position of coordinator of Institutional Strengthening at the SCJN, with a monthly salary of 122,851 pesos. This position was created as part of a restructuring carried out by Minister Norma Piña to concentrate administrative, security, logistics, and protocol tasks. Márquez has more than 28 years of experience in public security and crime prevention, having held relevant roles in the SNSP during Calderón's administration.

Before his position at the SCJN, Márquez had been the head of the National Information Center of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SNSP). During Genaro García Luna's conviction, Márquez was in that dependency. In Calderón's administration, he directed the Information Unit for Public Security, being responsible for significant technological projects in security. In 2023, he assumed his current position as Coordinator of Institutional Strengthening at the SCJN, appointed by the president minister.
