Increasing Violence in Morelos During Holy Week

During the Holy Week vacation, 17 fatal victims of violence were recorded in the state of Morelos, including two women and a 12-year-old girl. Feminists expressed their sorrow over the persistence of feminicide violence which, according to them, continues to be one of the most severe problems in the region.

The number of homicides increased since the beginning of the holiday week. On Tuesday the 16th, five homicides were reported in different areas of the state, including the murder of two men in a motorcycle workshop in Miacatlán. Meanwhile, on Monday the 15th, at the beginning of Holy Week, four more homicides had already been counted, including the grim discovery of a decapitated man in Yecapixtla, with evident signs of violence.

On Saturday the 19th, in Cuautla, another murder took place inside a funeral home, where the 12-year-old girl was also injured and later died. By early April, 33 feminicides had been recorded in the state of Morelos, according to Andrea Acevedo, spokesperson for the collective Divulgadoras.

Adriana Mújica, an activist and member of gender 33, emphasized that feminicide violence shows no respite during celebrations, highlighting the magnitude of the problem that affects women of all ages and in any place. In an interview, Mújica mentioned the urgency of an integrated plan to address this phenomenon, involving both security measures and a cultural change that respects the dignity of women.

Mújica stressed that gender violence alerts should not just be an administrative procedure, but a serious responsibility of the authorities, reflected in concrete public policies. In addition to feminicides, violence in Morelos also manifested in the murders of young people in Zacatepec and Jojutla, as well as other violent acts in different locations such as Cuautla, Cuernavaca, and Tepalcingo. One of the most recent cases was that of a 12-year-old girl who was a victim of gunfire in Huitzilac.
