In the context of the commemoration of International Women's Day, various demonstrations took place in different parts of Mexico. In the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, a march was held demanding the decriminalization of abortion, justice for the victims of femicide, equality of job opportunities, and denouncing political gender violence, among other claims.
During the march, Mafer, an artist and activist who disappeared in Tepoztlán and was murdered in December 2023, was also remembered. The contingents marched through the streets of Cuernavaca, starting from the "El Niño Artillero" roundabout to the Historic Center. There were slogans in favor of abortion and critiques of the patriarchal system.
In a particular symbolic act, protesters burned a figure of Cuauhtémoc Blanco, former governor of Morelos and current deputy of Morena, accusing him of violence against women. The figure was burned in front of Bellas Artes while slogans against him were shouted. Amid the demonstration, voices could be heard calling him a "women's rapist."
Regarding this case, it was recently determined that no trial will be initiated against Cuauhtémoc Blanco, who faced allegations of alleged sexual abuse against his half-sister. This decision was made by the Instructing Section of the Chamber of Deputies, allowing Blanco to maintain his immunity and evade facing justice for the moment. Despite the allegations against him, the deputy has denied the charges and has mentioned a complaint of extortion against him.
In this context, the 8M in Cuernavaca was a scene of protests, demands, and denunciations that highlighted the struggle for women's rights and the demand for justice against various forms of gender violence.
