Culiacán witnesses a spike in violence with 11 murders reported in 24 hours, including five in Culiacán and four in Escuinapa. Federal forces have intervened.


Violence Surge in Culiacán Leads to Multiple Homicides

During this weekend, violence in Sinaloa surged again, also affecting the municipality of Escuinapa in the south of the state, bordering Nayarit and Durango. In this location, a confrontation between civilians resulted in four fatalities. In response to this situation, federal forces intervened in the area, managing to detain six armed individuals, as well as seize weapons and vehicles.

In total, during the last 24 hours, 11 murders were reported in the region: four in Escuinapa, five in Culiacán, and two in Mazatlán. In Escuinapa, specifically in the town of El Camarón near the El Peñón dam, four lifeless bodies were found with bullet wounds and wearing tactical clothing, following an alleged confrontation between armed groups. The confirmation of these fatalities was made by the State Attorney General's Office on Monday, January 20.

Regarding the case in Culiacán, two homicides occurred in the Fraccionamiento Los Ángeles when a family in a vehicle was chased by armed individuals. In Mazatlán, the discovery of two lifeless bodies was reported in the Francisco Villa neighborhood. Additionally, other homicides were recorded in the Capistrano neighborhood and in the El Ranchito area, both south of Culiacán, where the victims exhibited gunshot wounds.

Besides the bodies found in the aforementioned locations, authorities also located a body with bullet wounds on the Culiacán-Mazatlán highway and seized a stolen vehicle that had allegedly been used in the confrontations. In the operations, six rifles, 40 rifle magazines, explosive devices, and tactical vests were confiscated. One of the detained civilians was found to be seriously injured and was transferred to a hospital at risk of death.
