Investigation into Political Murder in Culiacán

The governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, during his weekly conference on Monday, mentioned that no one is excluded from being investigated or summoned by the Federal Prosecutor's Office regarding the case of the assassination of Héctor Melesio Cuén Ojeda. In the same vein, President Claudia Sheinbaum also spoke about the investigation conducted by the FGR.

Initially, the Sinaloa Prosecutor's Office reported that Héctor Melesio Cuén suffered an attack near the international highway in the north of Culiacán. However, after a series of investigations, the initial version indicating that the official was killed at a gas station was dismissed.

Héctor Melesio Cuén was a political rival of Governor Rubén Rocha. According to information from a letter written by Ismael Zambada, a meeting was agreed upon between the governor, the mayor of Culiacán, and Zambada to "resolve differences among the political leaders" of the state. During this meeting at a ranch in Culiacán, Zambada stated that he was ambushed, and also mentioned in the letter the homicide of Héctor Melesio Cuén, indicating that he was killed at the same place and time he was kidnapped.

The Attorney General's Office has revealed that Héctor Cuén was murdered at the ranch where Ismael Zambada was detained last July. The FGR disqualified the evidence presented by the state prosecutor's office, labeling the video of the alleged attack at the gas station as a "setup." In addition, it reported that police officers, public prosecutors, experts, and personnel from the Sinaloa Prosecutor's Office are being investigated for their alleged involvement in Héctor Melesio's death.

In a morning conference, Governor Claudia Sheinbaum left the case in the hands of the Attorney General's Office, while Governor Rocha recalled having requested former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to take the case to the federal level to avoid suspicions. He emphasized that the determination of the possible responsibility of public servants corresponds to the Attorney General's Office, and that he will not issue opinions in an ongoing process.

On October 20, it was reported that Héctor Melesio Cuén was murdered at the ranch where Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada was kidnapped in July. Cuén was recognized for being the rector of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa, and his murder was revealed following the detention of 'El Mayo' Zambada.
