Fourteen people were detained in the rural area of Culiacán, known as 'El Conejo', in the municipality of Costa Rica, after a thwarted confrontation during an operation carried out by the Mexican Army. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, and the detained individuals were identified as suspected members of the criminal group 'Los Chapitos' from the Sinaloa Cartel.
According to reports from the authorities, the armed group was at the location preparing for an attack in the town of Costa Rica, prompting several emergency calls alerting about the presence of the criminals.
In response to the alerts from the population, the Army deployed a convoy of soldiers to the site, but the criminals, upon noticing the arrival of the military forces, attempted to escape in a bulletproof and equipped Nissan NP300 truck that could fire rifles from its interior.
During the escape, the vehicle went off the road and fell into an empty canal, leaving several occupants injured. The military secured the 14 detainees and proceeded to seize an arsenal composed of 13 assault rifles, including several AK-47s, known as 'cuernos de chivo'.
Additionally, about 8,000 cartridges, more than 100 magazines, and the truck used by the criminals for their escape were confiscated. The captured individuals were identified as Francisco Alonso 'N', Cuauhtémoc 'N', Felizardo 'N', Luis Fernando 'N', Kevin Josué 'N', Jesús Artemio 'N', Humberto 'N', Eduardo 'N', Rubén 'N', Miguel Ernesto 'N', Alan 'N', Miguel Ángel 'N', and Esteban 'N'.
The Mexican Army handed over the 14 detainees, along with the seized arsenal and vehicle, to the Attorney General's Office (FGR) where the corresponding legal process will begin to determine their legal situation.
