Identification of Deceased in Sinaloa Achieved

The Attorney General's Office of the State of Sinaloa has managed to identify 191 deceased persons thanks to the comparison of fingerprints with the National Electoral Institute (INE). Between May 2024 and February 2025, the attorney general's office sent the fingerprint records of 450 deceased persons found in the Semefo of Culiacán and in Los Mochis for comparison. These records correspond to deceased persons who remained unidentified in the Semefo of Culiacán since 2018.

Of the 450 records sent from Culiacán, 191 have matched with the INE registry, allowing the identification of the deceased. Of these, 44 persons have already been handed over to their families. The results of the comparison of the 56 records sent from Los Mochis are still awaited. In cases where no matches are found with the INE records, the attorney general's system will allow comparisons with international records, especially from Central America, to identify possible migrants.

The Sinaloa attorney general's office has enabled a section on its official website where the data of deceased and unclaimed persons, both identified and unidentified, are published. "The platform with information about the persons identified with the INE is a national example of how, through a practical and multidisciplinary approach, families seeking their loved ones throughout the Republic can be responded to. Human identification is not an easy task, but it is not one without a solution either," said Maximilia Murck from UNFPA.

This effort is the result of coordination between the Government of Sinaloa, the Federal Government, through the National Search Commission for Persons (CNB), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
