Culiacán Faces Surge in Violent Attacks on Police

In Culiacán, Sinaloa, seven police officers have been killed since the confrontation began between the criminal groups of Los Chapitos and the son of Mayo Zambada. The murders have been recorded both in Culiacán and Mazatlán, municipalities where violent events have intensified since September 9.

The most recent occurred at 8:40 am on Mexico 68 Avenue at the corner of Álvaro Obregón, where two police officers died and two others were injured. The deceased were identified as Isidro and Jasiel, while one of the injured is Francisco Eduardo. The officers were traveling in municipal patrol car 0768 marked with the Culiacán Municipal Police insignia.

The attack was a direct assault on the police officers during a surveillance patrol in the southern part of the city. The patrol received multiple gunfire, leaving two agents dead inside. The other two injured were taken to the General Hospital of Culiacán, where one of them died.

The city of Culiacán experienced tense moments on Thursday, January 23. In the morning, an explosive device detonated at the monument to the tomb of Edgar Guzmán, son of El Chapo Guzmán, in a shopping mall parking lot. The incident caused damage to the mausoleum, leaving only a cross and debris around.

Simultaneously, at one end of the city, a municipal police patrol was shot at by an armed group. Protests were also reported in Culiacán for the murder of a family last Sunday. The demonstrators, including parents, teachers, and students, demanded justice for the victims, including the children Gael and Alexander, aged 12 and 9, and their father Antonio de Jesús.

The latter, along with his children, was shot at while traveling by car through the Los Ángeles neighborhood. It is presumed they attempted to be robbed, and while trying to flee, they were pursued and shot.
