On Thursday, January 23, information was reported about the explosive attack on the cenotaph dedicated to Edgar Guzmán López, son of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, known as "El Chapo Guzmán", leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. This action left the vendors with no time to replenish the flowers for Mother's Day.
The destroyed altar, spread on social media, showed the serious damage caused by the explosives, reportedly detonated by Los Mayitos. This attack is part of the escalating war between two groups of the Sinaloa Cartel: Los Chapitos, sons of "El Chapo" Guzmán, and Los Mayitos, led by the son of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada.
The intensification of the conflict in Sinaloa came after Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada was handed over by Joaquín Guzmán López to the DEA, considered a betrayal by Los Chapitos. This triggered a confrontation with Los Mayitos, led by Ismael Zambada Sicairos, alias "El Mayito Flaco".
Although not an official mandate, it is mentioned that drug traffickers usually respect the premise of not involving family in disputes, something that Los Chapitos and Los Mayitos seem to ignore by unleashing a violent war for control of Sinaloa.
Sinaloa authorities confirmed the attack on the cenotaph of Edgar Guzmán and noted that a blue Nissan Sentra was damaged in the explosion. The death of Edgar Guzmán, caused by hitmen from the Beltrán Leyva Cartel in 2008, led El Chapo to buy all the roses in Culiacán for his funeral, a gesture that has been marked in the history of the place.
