The Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) reported the capture of Luis Alberto 'N', alias 'El Cañas', who is identified as one of the alleged heads of the Pacific Cartel (Sinaloa) and considered the right-hand man of José Humberto Figueroa Benítez, alias 'El 27' or 'La Perris', chief of security for Los Chapitos, part of the group of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán's sons, known for carrying out assassination tasks.
'El Cañas', considered a trusted man of 'El 27', was captured in the town of Guamuchilera, Sinaloa, where five other people were also apprehended. During the operation, authorities secured five high-caliber weapons, 11 magazines, 524 cartridges, two grenades, tactical equipment, and two vehicles.
According to the Sedena statement, 'the detainees and the secured items were made available to the competent authorities to determine their legal situation and continue with investigations and forensic actions'. José Humberto Figueroa Benítez, alias 'El 27', assumed the role of chief of security for Los Chapitos after the capture of Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, alias 'El Nini', in November 2023.
'El 27' was close to being captured during a federal operation on October 27 but managed to escape. He is the security leader of Los Chapitos, one of the factions of the Sinaloa Cartel. The capture of 'El Cañas' occurs in the context of the 100 Days Plan implemented by the Mexican Army with the aim of guaranteeing security in the state of Sinaloa, especially in Culiacán, in light of the confrontations between rival cartel groups.
On October 10, 'El 27' was pointed out as responsible for a confrontation between Los Chapitos and the Mexican Army in Sinaloa, escalating violence in the region.
