The Office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN-DH) strongly condemned the murder of journalist Alejandro Gallegos León, which occurred in Tabasco, and urged authorities to carry out a thorough investigation into the homicide.
Gallegos León was the founder of the media outlet La Voz del Pueblo and also collaborated as a columnist for Tabasco Hoy and as a teacher. The UN-DH expressed its shock at the tragic event and conveyed its solidarity with the family and friends of the communicator in these difficult times.
Gallegos León's disappearance was initially reported on Friday, and his death was confirmed the following day in the municipality of Cárdenas. In light of this unfortunate news, the organization Article 19 called for justice and demanded that the Special Prosecutor's Office for Attention to Crimes Committed Against Freedom of Expression (FEADLE) take on the case and consider Gallegos's journalistic work as a possible motive for the crime.
According to colleagues of the journalist, Gallegos specialized in covering educational and political issues, and also managed a citizen reporting page called La Voz del Pueblo, Noticias Sin Censura. His murder represents a severe blow to press freedom in Mexico, where the number of journalists killed since the year 2000 exceeds 169, with two cases recorded during the current administration of Claudia Sheinbaum, which began in October 2024.
