Mexico's New Semiconductor Project Signals Economic Shift

Mexico is officially entering the semiconductor industry with a new project announced by the government. This initiative aims to leverage local scientific expertise to address both local and global market needs for technology.

Mexico's New Semiconductor Project Signals Economic Shift

Currently, automakers and increasingly oil companies are looking to reduce costs. Mexicans are known for their expertise in oil and cars, but the suitability of directing the country towards a growing industry is being raised.

The Mexican government, with a recently presented project, seeks to pivot towards chip production, looking to the future. Edmundo Gutiérrez Domínguez, national coordinator of the Semiconductor Project of Mexico, indicated that the country's scientific expertise in this area will be leveraged to develop solutions for sectors such as the automotive, appliances, and medical equipment industries.

This new approach entails a transition to a technologically relevant field of greater global importance. The process will begin with chip design, aiming to meet the demands of the local and global market in various strategic sectors for Mexico.

The Inter-American Development Bank recognizes Mexican institutions, such as INAOE and CINVESTAV, as part of the country's strengths in this field. It is expected that by 2026 a company model, whether public, private, or mixed, will be defined to build a semiconductor factory that could be realized by 2029.

The new project, called 'Kutsari', would represent a National Semiconductor Design Center and would soon begin manufacturing simpler chips, such as those used in the automotive industry. The United States, for its part, has allocated a significant amount of money for semiconductor research and production, indicating the strategic relevance of this industry worldwide.
