The Intermunicipal System of Potable Water and Sewer Services (SIAPA) has shared that the first actions of the Preventive Cleaning Plan for the 2025 Rainy Season have been completed 100%. These works began on February 17 and included the cleaning of the 11 siphons located under Line 2 of the Light Rail.
As a result of these efforts, a volume of 794.90 cubic meters of sediment was extracted, equivalent to 113 dump trucks. Among the extracted material were sanitary and domestic waste, as well as dirt and mud. This is why authorities are calling on citizens to avoid throwing garbage in the streets and thus help maintain the work carried out by the operating agency.
This program is carried out annually before the start of the rainy season with the aim of leaving the siphons in optimal condition to allow for efficient rainwater flow and thus prevent flooding in the city. During the rainy season, the previous cleaning performed in prior months is reinforced to avoid damage to the city's rainwater collection infrastructure.
The complete plan has an approximate duration of six months and involves the participation of more than 400 workers from the operational and administrative areas of SIAPA. One of the most remembered floods in the Light Rail occurred on June 10, 2018, after heavy rain affected the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area.
On that occasion, many people were trapped in the Light Rail cars at the height of the Dermatological station of Line 1, having to be rescued by neighbors with the help of lifesavers and ropes. This situation motivated the authorities of Jalisco to strengthen cleaning efforts of the sewer system to prevent similar incidents in the future.
