Sonora Prosecutor's Office Clarifies Attack on Bacanora Mayor

The Attorney General's Office of Sonora reported that the armed aggression that occurred on February 24 on the Mazatán-Hermosillo highway, where Édgar Martínez Biebrich, son of Bacanora's mayor Nora Alicia Biebrich Duarte, was killed, has been clarified. The institution stated that one of the suspects has been arrested and another was neutralized after confronting agents during an operation to serve an arrest warrant. During the operation, two agents were injured, one with a femur fracture and another with facial injuries from shrapnel; both are reported out of danger. At the scene, weapons and tactical equipment were secured, including a Colt M4 carbine model, caliber 5.56 millimeters with the serial number erased, high-capacity magazines, live cartridges, and a fragmentation grenade. Ballistic tests determined that the assault rifle seized was used in the February 24 attack on the Hermosillo-Sahuaripa road, where Édgar Martínez died. Similarly, the toxicological test on the neutralized assailant was positive for amphetamines and methamphetamines. The Prosecutor's Office added that both the detainee and the neutralized subject were identified as members of a criminal cell operating in the El Adivino area and noted that "previously there were no circumstances or conflicts between said criminal group and the environment of the mayor or her son." The Attorney General's Office of Sonora warned that investigations continue with the analysis of the evidence seized.
