The tension between the two main figures of the National Action Party (PAN) in Guanajuato is set to become the first acid test for the leadership of Jorge Romero in the main opposition party. The relationship between Governor Libia García Muñoz Ledo and Mayor of León Alejandra Gutiérrez seems to have reached a point of no return, especially due to the levels of public and private grievances between the two governors. This is a feud that dates back to last year, when García Muñoz Ledo was chosen by then-Governor Diego Sinhue as his successor. Gutiérrez, as mayor of the state's main district, aspired to the governorship but ultimately accepted Sinhue's decision and opted for re-election in León. In the first year of coexistence between Gutiérrez and García Muñoz Ledo, the confrontation has escalated. It is notable: in both camps, the accusation of some kind of collusion that would allow MORENA to rise in the Bajío region is reiterated. Close to the mayor, they point to the state executive for a series of actions in the media aimed at eroding her image, mainly the publication of patrimonial issues. Gutiérrez has also accused Romero, at a meeting in CDMX, of strong interference from the state executive in the PAN members of the León city council, as well as a certain economic suffocation of the mayor's finances. For Romero, this is a complex situation because this Saturday he expects to ratify the new PAN statutes, and it would be a problem for his leadership if this occasion coincided with his most important mayor in terms of vote capture leaving the party. Gutiérrez has been contacted by the Citizen's Movement (MC) since 2024, although in her circle they do not rule out exploring the path of building an independent political force, as long as an agreement with the PAN leadership is not reached.
