Fisherman Sunshine Rodríguez Peña, who worked at the Port of San Felipe in Mexicali, Baja California, was shot dead on Saturday, March 8th. The State Attorney General's Office (FGE) reported that he was hit by more than 40 shots. The head of the Attorney General's Office, María Elena Andrade, described it as an atypical case, as the area is not considered dangerous. It is believed that at least three hooded men carried out a direct attack, firing nine-millimeter caliber weapons from a white vehicle.
"There were no additional victims. All or nearly all of the shots penetrated his body, causing him more than 70 injuries," explained Andrade. It is being investigated whether the attackers waited for the victim to be alone, as there were other people with him who were not harmed. The Governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Ávila, assured that they will go to the last consequences to clarify the crime.
Regarding Sunshine Rodríguez, his family indicated that he had received threats in previous years but continued selling fish in different neighborhoods of Mexicali without hiding. In February 2023, he was found innocent of organized crime related to the illegal fishing of the totoaba fish, linked to the extinction of the vaquita marina. After a four-week trial, the judge determined that the Attorney General's Office did not present compelling evidence against him.
