Profeco Signs Gas Stations Over High Prices in Mexico

The Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office (Profeco) reported that 19 banners have been placed in 12 states of the country due to excessive fuel prices. The highest price of regular gasoline was recorded in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, reaching $26.50 per liter.

According to Profeco, some brands like BP, Oxxo Gas, and Petro Seven have agreed to set high prices at their gas stations. In addition to these brands, other stations were identified where fuel is sold above the amount estimated by the institution.

Profeco's operation 'Here they are ripping you off' involves placing banners at gas stations that maintain high prices, with the clear message: 'Don't fill up here, they are ripping you off with the prices.' The banners carry the logos of the Ministry of Economy and Profeco, along with a red cross.

Iván Escalante, head of Profeco, explained that this operation aims to curb excessive fuel prices, and several gas stations in three different states have already been identified. This monitoring extends to regular gasoline and diesel, two widely used fuels in Mexico.

The fair price of gasoline, according to Escalante, should range between $22.66 and $23.99 pesos per liter. Despite constant warnings and inspections, some stations continue to sell fuel above these prices.
