Samuel García, governor of Nuevo León, has raised the need to restructure the roadways in the region to improve access to public transportation and reduce traffic congestion. Amid a 50 percent increase in traffic due to the growth of the vehicle fleet, García proposes that people have mobility options within 500 meters of their homes.
"The goal is to avoid traffic, which requires a major change to solve the mobility problems in the region," the governor stated in the context of a population and vehicle increase in places like Monterrey. García emphasized the importance of providing quality public transportation to ease roadway congestion, referring to the construction of new metro lines and the addition of more mass transit units.
Recently, Samuel García faced criticism for comments related to public transportation and investment in roadway infrastructure for private vehicles. However, the governor refuted, through social media, the alleged preference for roadways at the expense of public transportation. A viral video taken out of context showed the governor comparing car usage in different regions of the world, emphasizing the culture of individual car use in Nuevo León.
García noted that mobility dynamics vary significantly in Europe and the United States, and that in Nuevo León, the prevalence of individual transportation has contributed to the collapse of roadway infrastructure. With a passenger car index of 1.3 people in the region, the governor urged rethinking mobility to reduce the number of individual car trips, proposing actions that promote greater use of public transportation and shared mobility.
