Monterrey Mayor Aims for Independent Candidacy Despite PRI Support

The mayor of Monterrey, Adrián de la Garza, highlighted his recent appointment by the National PRI as "Defender of Mexico," however, he dismissed being a member of the party. As LPO had anticipated, last week, it caused discomfort in the mayor's circle when the state leader of the PRI, José Luis Garza Ochoa, stated that his candidacy for governor in 2027 will be under the PRI's banner. However, he aims for a citizen/independent candidacy that highlights his personal project. He insists on the alliance. "It is important that we achieve true civic unity for the country's democracy, broadly speaking, for freedom, peace, tranquility, and security; that is what the citizenship wants, not only from Monterrey, Nuevo León, but from all of Mexico," he added. Furthermore, after the good rapport he has established with the national leader of the PAN, Jorge Romero, the municipal president celebrated that the blue-and-white party has opened its party to citizen candidacies. "I see it with great optimism and I am very pleased that the National Action Party has opened the possibility for not only party militants, but it is very clear that in these elections and the electoral processes to come, it is important to achieve the unity of citizens, it is very important and fundamental," he stated. Adrián de la Garza has shown affinity with both opposition parties and understands that at the state level, it is key to have the structure of both parties to compete with MC and Morena. "In the coming days we will be announcing what we are going to do... we are defenders of the country without any affiliation to any political party," commented De la Garza.
