Since late 2024, Armando Garza Sada, one of the owners of Grupo Alfa and until recently its main executive, strongly supported Claudia Sheinbaum, even in business circles where Morena was not well received. He highlighted the qualities of the current president as a prepared professional, familiar with global trends and committed to private investment. During the presidential campaign, Garza Sada facilitated at least two meetings between Sheinbaum and the main businessmen of Nuevo León.
Yesterday, both the president and Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard did not attend an important industrial sector forum in Monterrey. Close associates of the magnate mentioned that the government's absence was due to avoiding any connection with Governor Samuel García, who is experiencing a period of political instability.
In the transition, Garza Sada suggested that Sheinbaum could soften some decisions of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, but so far the government has shown no intentions of making adjustments. Senator Waldo Fernández, a regular in the business circle, received direct criticism for the judicial reform and for his attempts at rapprochement that were not well perceived.
Businessmen highlight two urgent matters. The opacity of Secretary of Finance Rogelio Ramírez de la O regarding the reform, and concerns about a possible downgrade in the credit rating that the market is already anticipating. Additionally, there is concern about the potential victory of Donald Trump in the U.S. elections, and how it would influence the bilateral relationship, generating uncertainty in the event that the Republicans return to power.
Despite the efforts made, the judicial reform continues to be a point of conflict without apparent solution. The main criticisms were directed at Ebrard, previously seen as an ally in the morenista environment but whose current rhetoric resembles that of more radical legislators of the ruling party. The animosity of businessmen in Monterrey towards Morena has increased significantly in recent times.
