The United States government has announced an increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum exports that will come into effect on the next March 12. This measure will consist of applying a 25% tariff on all imports of these materials into the northern country, which will have a significant impact on the metalworking sector in Puebla, affecting more than 90 companies dedicated to the transformation of steel and aluminum in the state.
The National Chamber of the Transformation Industry (Canacintra) in Puebla, led by Carlos Julián Sosa Spínola, has warned that 90% of the affiliated companies in the sector will be affected, which equals at least 88 companies dedicated to the transformation of steel and six focused on the transformation of aluminum. Additionally, 55% of the companies in the automotive and auto parts sector also depend on these materials, meaning the repercussions could extend to other areas of the economy.
The metalworking industry plays a fundamental role in the economic development of Puebla, as its production supplies various industries. According to Canacintra, the imposition of tariffs could lead to different consequences, such as loss of competitiveness, disruption of supply chains, increased production costs, layoffs, salary reductions, among other negative effects.
Given this scenario, Canacintra has urged the authorities to take urgent measures to protect the local economy and employment in Puebla. Among the proposals made are the modification of the State Procurement and Leasing Law to favor products manufactured in the state, diversification of export markets, and strengthening trade relations with the European Union and Arab countries with high purchasing power. Concrete actions are expected to be implemented to address this situation and mitigate its effects on the local economy.
