Puebla is shaping up to be a leader in electric mobility in Mexico and the headquarters of the Olinia project, according to Rodolfo Osorio de Carrera, General Director of Electromobility of the federal Ministry of Economy. During his participation in the Electromobility Forum 'Building the Future of Transportation' in the capital of Puebla, he emphasized the importance of transforming the automotive cluster towards the production of electric vehicles, considering it crucial for the state's economic future. Both Puebla and Sonora have offered infrastructure and human talent for the project, in collaboration with the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN).
'The first stone was laid with the innovation and assembly of the design that is being generated for the vehicle,' pointed out the federal official. The Olinia project aims to present a prototype of a mini electric vehicle for the 2026 World Cup, with the official production of the vehicle scheduled for 2028. This initiative seeks to position Mexico as a benchmark in the production of electric vehicles and contribute to the development of a more sustainable automotive industry.
Osorio de Carrera highlighted that electric vehicles will be ideal for transportation services, such as electric taxis and delivery platforms. The Puebla government has proposed to install the plant in the municipality of San José Chiapa as part of the 'Valley of Technology and Sustainability' project. Puebla's proximity to Mexico City and the freight corridors will facilitate the creation of efficient charging infrastructure connected with other cities in the metropolitan area.
Regarding the transition of public transport to electric units, Osorio de Carrera mentioned that Puebla has a great opportunity aligned with federal policies such as the Routes of Wellbeing. He emphasized that at the national level, it is expected that by 2030 or 2040, all public transport will be electric, given that 70% of the population uses this means. Puebla, with its automotive industry and public transport companies, has the potential to lead in electromobility.
The governor of Puebla, Alejandro Armenta, reported that he met with coordinators of the Olinia project to advance the production of electric cars in the entity. He highlighted Puebla's educational and technological potential as key to becoming a reference point in electromobility and automotive technology.
