Puebla Leads Cempasúchil Flower Production

Puebla leads in the production of cempasúchil flower with 75% of the total planted in Mexico, benefiting more than 500 families in the state. According to Óscar Hernández Fernández, Undersecretary of Rural Development (SDR), 1,607 hectares in Puebla are dedicated to cultivating this flower, whose demand increases on the Day of the Dead. Approximately 25,000 plants are produced annually for decorating gardens and public spaces.

The 44 municipalities in Puebla are the main producers of cempasúchil, with Atlixco having the largest production volume. This activity generates an estimated economic spillover of 100 million pesos. Hernández Fernández mentioned that the ornamental flower industry in Mexico represents around 30 billion pesos, yet it does not receive adequate attention at the national level.

In addition to being sold as cut flowers, cempasúchil is also marketed in pots, said Morayma Rubí Joven, head of the SDR.
