The Querétaro Legislature: An Analysis of Sessions

During the last months of the year, the LXI Legislature of Querétaro has met 8 times, in contrast to the 39 sessions held in Mexico City, of which 18 occurred in October, 13 in November, and 8 in December. Comparatively, other legislative powers such as that of Nuevo León have convened up to 43 times in the same period, Jalisco held 15 sessions, double that of Querétaro.

The LXI Legislature of Querétaro assumed its duties on September 26, 2024, holding its first solemn session to swear in the 25 local deputies. During this initial phase, political tensions arose regarding the formation of the board, showing differences with the activity timeline in Mexico City.

In the Bajío region, the state of Guanajuato held 19 sessions in the same period, 11 more than Querétaro. Hidalgo registered 35 sessions, 27 more than Querétaro, while in San Luis Potosí, there were 25 ordinary sessions, 11 solemn, and 1 extraordinary. Michoacán, on the other hand, held 43 sessions, more than 5 times that of Querétaro.

Within the framework of the few sessions held in Querétaro, deputy Sully Yanira Mauricio Sixtos from Morena mentioned they are working on a reform to increase the monthly sessions mandated by law. In contrast, the deputy from the Labor Party, Claudia Díaz Gayou, attributed the legislative paralysis to the scarcity of approved dictums.

On the other hand, Paul Ospital commented that the lack of weekly sessions limits the microphone time for the opposition. Leonor Mejía, a PAN deputy, considered the approval of initiatives about the number of sessions more relevant. According to the executive summary of the Legislature, 141 initiatives have been presented, of which only 49 have been approved to date.

Regarding the session calendar, the LXI Legislature of Querétaro resumed activities in October and held a total of 8 sessions until January 2025. In contrast, Mexico City had already held 9 ordinary sessions, starting a day earlier than in Querétaro.
