Debate on the prohibition of social media in Querétaro

Legislators in the state of Querétaro are debating an initiative to prohibit the use of social media and cell phones among minors under 14 years old, as well as the need for parental and guardian consent for young people aged 14 to 18 to access these platforms. Local deputy of the Labor Party, Claudia Díaz Gayou, and the political commissioner of the party in Querétaro, Valeria Flores Gauna, emphasized that the prohibition is not a comprehensive solution to ensure the safety and well-being of children and adolescents.

In this regard, they highlighted the importance of implementing a comprehensive digital education strategy that promotes responsible use of social media and raises awareness about the necessary precautions to avoid risky situations. Flores Gauna emphasized the need to work together with political parties, civil organizations, parents, authorities, and society in general to develop programs that benefit youth, rather than just limiting their access to these platforms.

Representatives from different political parties, including PAN, Morena, PRI, and Movimiento Ciudadano, have received the proposal, although the PT representation was not invited to this discussion. They stressed the importance of not automatically rejecting the initiative, as it is under review and needs to be thoroughly analyzed for its implications.

Despite efforts to regulate and prohibit the use of social media and mobile phones, lawmakers emphasized that a deep debate is needed to understand the objectives of this bill. They insisted that prohibition alone does not guarantee the protection of the rights of children and adolescents and that it is essential to consider broader approaches that promote safe and responsible technology use.
