The Governor of Querétaro, Mauricio Kuri, expressed his satisfaction with the approval of the Law Against Electoral Nepotism. This reform establishes several important provisions. Firstly, it prohibits the immediate re-election of senators and deputies of the Congress of the Union. It also prevents the consecutive re-election of local deputies, municipal presidents, councilors, and syndics. Furthermore, substitutes for senators and deputies will not be able to run as main candidates in the next term if they have previously held the position.
Another relevant point of the reform is the prohibition of electoral nepotism. Starting in 2030, no person will be able to aspire to an elected office if they have maintained a marital, cohabitation, or partnership bond with a currently serving official in the last six years. It will also not be allowed to nominate those who have kinship by consanguinity or affinity up to the fourth degree with a public servant in office.
Mauricio Kuri announced that he will promote the inclusion of a nepotism prohibition in the statutes of the National Action Party (PAN) in response to public demand. The governor emphasized that there is no place for nepotism in Querétaro and advocated for the immediate application of this law in his party.
The Senate approved the Law Against Electoral Nepotism, driven by President Claudia Sheinbaum. However, the law will not come into effect until the year 2030, a fact that Kuri lamented. Despite this, he celebrated the approval of the legislation and expressed confidence that its implementation would contribute to strengthening transparency and democracy in the country.
