Proposal for Police Salary Increase in Querétaro

The senator from Querétaro, Agustín Dorantes Lambarri, will present an initiative in the Senate aimed at increasing the salaries of municipal police officers across the country to 16,700 pesos, which is the average salary of employees registered with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).

In a press conference, Dorantes Lambarri expressed the importance of providing police officers with a decent salary, as well as adequate benefits such as medical and life insurance. He also highlighted the need to provide them with tools, technology, and intelligence to improve security in their respective states.

The senator pointed out that the recent modification to Article 123 of the Mexican Constitution, driven by Morena and its allies to raise salaries in certain sectors, did not include local police officers, making this salary review vital. His proposal includes the creation of a federal fund to strengthen agents in all municipalities in the country, similar to the existing FORTASEG or FORTAMUN.

According to a study by the Belisario Domínguez Institute of the Senate of the Republic, police officers in Mexico earn an average of 8,000 pesos per month. Given the security situation in the state, Dorantes Lambarri stated that Querétaro stands out for its security compared to other states, but there is a need to keep the local police protected and well-equipped.

The senator mentioned that his initiative seeks to avoid exposing municipal police officers to risks and the pressure of seeking more resources to support their families. He emphasized that the strategy that has worked in states like Querétaro, Yucatán, and Coahuila should be replicated across the country to achieve safe and peaceful areas.
