
Journalist Kristian Uriel Martínez Zavala was murdered in the early hours of March 2 in Silao, Guanajuato. The State Attorney General's Office (FGE) has launched an investigation and has committed to clarifying the crime promptly, ensuring the capture of those responsible. The journalist's family reported that they had not received prior threats related to his journalistic work or his job as a DJ in the municipalities of Romita and Silao.
The State Council for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists strongly condemned the murder and requested the FGE to conduct a swift investigation to bring those responsible to justice. During an extraordinary session, the attorney general was asked to consider the possible connection of the crime to Martínez Zavala's journalistic work.
Gerardo Vázquez Alatriste, attorney general, stated that different lines of investigation are being explored, including the one related to the journalist's informational activities. A specific cause of the crime has not yet been determined. It was agreed that Vázquez Alatriste will present a report on the progress of this case and others related to murdered journalists in a scheduled extraordinary session on March 5.
The Silao community paid tribute to Kristian Uriel Martínez Zavala at the funeral home Casa Obregón, with a security ring provided by the State Public Security Forces. Only family and close friends were allowed to attend the wake. The mayor of Silao, Melanie Murillo Chávez, expressed her condolences to the journalist's family and stated that the municipality will closely collaborate with the FGE to clarify the case and provide support to the victim's relatives during these difficult times.
