The State Attorney General's Office for Environmental Protection of Jalisco (Proepa) temporarily closed the municipal landfill of Tala, also known as 'Corral Falso', for non-compliance with established environmental regulations. During the inspection, it was found that the landfill did not comply with the Mexican Official Standard NOM-083-SEMARNAT-2003, which regulates environmental protection in the management of urban solid waste and special handling waste. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the landfill did not have the corresponding authorization from the Secretariat of Environment and Territorial Development (Semadet) to operate.
According to Proepa, the operations carried out at the Tala landfill posed an environmental risk due to various elements detected at the site. Among the deficiencies found are the direct disposal of urban solid waste on natural soil without impermeabilization measures, the lack of a storm drainage system, and the absence of an emergency area for contingencies. Additionally, the presence of uncovered waste was observed, leaving it exposed to the environment, as well as the lack of monitoring of biogas, leachate, and aquifers.
In light of this situation, a partial temporary closure of the landfill was carried out, prohibiting the deposit of waste in all areas, except for an emergent temporary cell delineated within the site. This measure was taken due to the imminent risk of ecological imbalance and potential damage to natural resources, as well as to the health of the population.
In summary, the closure of the municipal landfill of Tala was carried out due to non-compliance with environmental norms and for posing a risk to the environment and public health. It is expected that the competent authorities will take the necessary measures to regularize the situation and prevent negative impacts in the area.
