The official Facebook page of the Tepotzotlán municipal government suffered a cyber attack on Monday morning. An unidentified group managed to illegally access and modify both the profile picture and the cover photo of the page. Municipal authorities confirmed the intrusion in a statement on their website, indicating that the account was compromised by unauthorized access. Contact has been initiated with Meta Platforms Inc., the company that owns Facebook, to restore institutional access.
The City Council urged the population and the media to obtain information exclusively through the official website. They requested not to share or interact with the content posted on the hacked page, as it does not reflect the stance of the municipal government. The mayor of Tepotzotlán, María de los Ángeles Zuppa Villegas, asked to be vigilant and not to fall for misinformation.
Zuppa Villegas requested an indefinite leave from her position and is barred for seven months following a sanction from the Administrative Justice Tribunal of the State of Mexico. The attackers replaced the institutional image with that of a masked character associated with the "Anonymous" collective, using the iconic Guy Fawkes mask as a symbol of cyber activism.
In a video published by the hackers, they warn: "We are a legion, we do not forgive, we do not forget, we expect." In response to these alterations, the local government filed a formal complaint with the Cyber Police and is working with digital security specialists to regain control of the account.
